Round 5 was happy hunting for our three Seniors teams, with all 3 posting wins — nice to have State League get on the winners list, and a great way for Divvy 3 to start. There was quite a buzz around the Clubrooms Saturday night — time to get along and catch up with mates at the Club, for those who haven’t been around lately.

Quiz question: When did Malvern last have 3 Senior teams. Answer below.

This week is the launch of the re-vamped Malvern Lacrosse website, www.malvernlacrosse.com. According to webmaster Fazzer: there are still small areas of development going on, but the majority of the site is complete. Go check it out!
Congratulations to Pat McGrath-Campbell, who’s been in great form in State League — Pat’s been selected in the U19 Vic Team for the National Championships at Caulfield in July.

This weekend the Kangas Aussie Youth development team will be at the Clubrooms for team dinner Saturday after our State League Caulfield game — the Kangas are having their pre-Canada training camp this weekend at Caulfield.

Best of luck for all our teams for Round 6 this Saturday — last Saturday 107 players took the field in our 8 teams, plus coaches, refs, team managers, scorers, sausage sizzlers, bar keepers — a cast of thousands. Go Malvern!!!

Best regards,

Mike

Mens Round 5: 10th May 2008

State League: vs Moreland 18-11

Coach Skeps wrote:

This week’s game against Moreland was a much anticipated encounter, and saw a determined Malvern side eager to rebound after previous losses. We began strongly, but our opposition was up to the task and certainly made it a good contest, going goal for goal with us for most of the first half. Our attack was in good form this week with Travis Croll (5-1), Josh Naughton (3-4) and Rob Chamberlain (3-0) dominating the Moreland defence. Scoreboard pressure was the key: a 2 goal lead at 1/2 time was a handy break, a good start after the main break had us in a great position with a 4 goal lead, only to be wasted after stints in the penalty box saw Moreland capitalise and level the scores. Malvern rallied late in the 3rd qtr, with solid performances through the midfield: James Garrett (3-3), Rowan Anglicas (2-1), Ollie Smith (1-0) and Pat McGrath Campbell (1-0) were all able to assert their authority and control the tempo of the game. Ollie Johnson made his SL debut in goals for the year and returned a solid performance, backing up the in-form defence of Nick Lopes, Anthony Jenkinson and Ryan Scanlan, who all combined to frustrate and repel the Moreland attack. All in all, it was a satisfying performance that we can take a lot of confidence out of, particularly as 7 players contributed on the scoreboard. We now have to maintain this momentum for next week against arch-rivals Caulfield.

Division 2: vs Caulfield 29-1

Long-stick Tim Naughton wrote:

Div 2 played Caulfield on the weekend and won a very convincing 29 to 1. Tim Laidlaw and Shannon Bell both scored 8 goals, with scores for most of the rest of the team. Strong performances out of the face offs by Steve Bown and Billy Exton helped keep the ball going Malvern’s way most of the day. Defence played solidly, keeping the pressure on Caulfield.

Division 3: vs Surrey Park 15-11

Staff writer Dave Gerrard wrote:

It has been many years since Malvern has had 3 senior teams, but on Saturday it happened - joining our State League and Division 2 teams we have Division 3. Filled with a blend of old timers and under 16 players the team played top of the ladder Surrey Park and won 15-11.

The combined age of our attack line was 137 - you could say there is a lot of experience in the line - if not a lot of movement. The forwards are Glen Meredith (Rubber), Murry Keen (Muzza), and Roy Spiers (Spiersy or RRS), and they obviously performed well, with Muz getting 3 votes and the perennial runner-up, Rubber, getting 2. Of course the ball had to get to them so they could get the glory, and Rod Finnigan and Paul Keisler continuously got the ball from the centre for the team. The forwards should also be thanked for helping Rod break his drought - he finally scored. The back line also played and was led by Tom Benson in goals, who stopped many Surrey thrusts and sent the ball down to attack. The defenders did a great job, holding out Surrey’s quick attack players, with Norm Coleman, David Gerrard and John Cantone being the senior members, with Joel Hourigan-Richmond adding youth. The team used youth and fitness to transport the ball, with Callum Gerrard, Jesse Coleman, Terry Gentle, and father and son pair, Mike and Liam Sharp, doing the running. Thanks to Brad Bell for coaching this newly formed and winning outfit of misfits.

U18: vs MHS2 17-1

Asst Coach Patty wrote:

Superior skill and teamwork gave the Malvern U18’s a comfortable victory over Melbourne High School. Great improvement was shown through the back and midfield lines, with contested ground balls going in our favour. The attack line were able to execute countless times through quick ball movement and well disciplined play.
Jake Coleman came up with 4 goals on the day, while having an outstanding game through the midfield. The Anglicas brothers dazzled the opposition goalie, with Rowan netting 5 and Daniel 4, one goal between his legs. Jay Baskaran, the goalie on the day, had the highlight of the day running from his own goals to the opposition’s to score. Ollie Smith and Mez Clough added to scoreboard, Smith with 2 and Clough with 1. Mitch Dobb played an outstanding game, picking up numerous groundballs through the midfield like a hoover. The defence played great body position d, while providing excellent support all through the back and midfield lines, restricting the opposition to 1 goal.

Going on this recent form, we will be entering next week’s game confidently against an Altona opposition.

U16: vs Surrey Park 3-13

Coach Marty wrote:

10:30 am: game was won already / just had to get onto the ground / no big deal / should win.

Not saying this was through the whole group, but the feeling I had: this was the mind set. Very disappointing outcome for me and the Club. Better now than during the Finals. Still a great deal of work is required. The Malvern Team I saw playing on Saturday was not the same as the week before against Willy.

Hope the defeat burns deep / I’m sure we will learn by this / I’m sure (hope) every player is feeling the same.

Till next week. Marty.

U14: vs Footscray 15-11

Coach Josh wrote:

Despite the absence of a goalie stick, Malvern overcame Footscray with a 7 goal final term to win 14-11. The home crowd at Footscray were very vocal, but our boys managed to fight through it all and remain undefeated. Sam Anglicas led all scorers with 5 goals, including 4 in the last, and Toby Exton slotted home 4 after arriving on the stroke of half time. Two goals went to each of our lefty attackmen, Joe Blakeney and Michael Alaimo. The midfield was paced by Jaxon Glover, who also had a stint in goals for the first quarter, Max Dalgleish and Hamish Johnson. Our defense did well to contain the opposition and special mention must go to James Butler, who played the second half in goals.

U12 Black: vs Moreland 29-0

Coach Gazzer wrote:

The Black team had another strong team showing on Saturday, winning 29-0 against a younger Moreland team. Everyone once again managed to get on the scoresheet, and everyone collected at least 2 assists for the day. Darcy had a day out, scoring 7 goals and getting 5 assists, while strong support from Nic Chapman (5 goals) (who would have been a little bit nervous at one stage in the last quarter!), Guy Exton, Jordy Campbell, and new player to the Blacks team, Alex Kofler-Rogers, all managed 4 goals each. Elliot had his best game for the year, making several strong runs and ended up with a goal and 2 assists, while Ben Chapman was able to pick up any loose ground balls, and ensure that a strong attack on the goal was about to come. Regular defencemen, Hugo, Rupert and Tim, stopped any attempted Moreland threats on goal, and each ended up with at least a goal.

U12 Red: vs Surrey Park 25-0

Joe Maher wrote:

The Under 12 Reds battled hard against Surrey Park. However, Surrey were too experienced and too big. There was some great goal-keeping by Dylan, Tom, Aaron and George. George epitomised the spirit of the team, winning the ball against a much bigger opponent in a series of contests. The whole team kept trying hard, with Lachlan and Nick also catching the umpire’s eye. We look forward to more even contests.

[Ed. Maybe next time around, on 9th August, we'll switch our Blacks and Reds when they play Moreland/Surrey again, since Surrey should be in A's, Moreland in B's anyway.]
